Age Information: Parent & Child Aquatics age range from 6 months through 4 years.

Level 1 starts at age four.

Level 1: Introduction to Water Skills


  • Help students feel comfortable in the water
  • Basic water safety rules
  • Swimming on front and back using arm and leg actions
  • Submerging entire head
  • Exhaling water
  • Picking up submerged object
  • Floating on front and back

Level 2: Fundamental Aquatic Skills


  • Blowing bubbles through nose
  • Front and back glide
  • Treading water using arm and leg motions
  • Bobbing in water
  • Submerging entire head
  • Jellyfish float and turtle float
  • Swimming using combined stroke on front and back without assistance

Level 3: Stroke Development


  • Build on the skills in Level 2 by providing guided practice
  • Submerging and retrieving an object
  • Front and back crawl
  • Sitting, kneeling, and standing dive
  • Rotary breathing in horizontal position
  • Survival float, back float
  • Butterfly-kick and body motion
  • Swimming across the pool and back without assistance

Level 4: Stroke Improvement


  • Provide further coordination and refinement of strokes
  • Survival float, back float
  • Elementary backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly
  • Feet-first surface dive
  • Front and back crawl

Level 5: Stroke Refinement


  • Provide further coordination and refinement of strokes
  • Standing dive (diving progression)
  • Open turns on front and back
  • Front and back crawl
  • Front flip turn and back flip turn
  • Elementary backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly

Level 6: Swimming and Skill Proficiency


  • Refine all the strokes so students swim with ease, efficiency, power, and smoothness over greater distances.
  • Track starts
  • Open turns and flip turns
  • Prepare the skills to advance into the swim team or Billings Aquatics Club (BAC)
